Description:
Large greenish woodpecker, with scaling on underparts. Larger yellowish bill, prominent dark moustachial stripe, unstreaked throat and upper breast, boldly scaled underparts, and prominent whitish barring on tail. Male has red crown, which is black (streaked with grey) on female.
Distribution:
Common resident and partial altitudinal migrant in all valleys across Gilgit-Baltistan. Found in mixed coniferous or deciduous forest, open country with tall trees, scrub, orchards or plantations provide foraging and nesting sites, up to 3500m.
Behavior:
Forages mostly by pecking and hammering on trees. Regularly descends to ground for ants and termites, also inspects rocks. Moves on the ground by hopping. Predominantly ants and termites, also larvae of wood-boring insects; berries and other plant material also taken in winter.
